tutorial no 2




I was taken by a circular Chinese motif that got me to work out something on my own, just to make a different style or pattern using the same image. Here is how I went about the work and what I ended up with.   I tried making this as simple as possible with as many detailed instructions as I could have. These are not the only options or ways to go about a certain motif,just think out of the box and imagine how you would like to see a certain design or pattern. Creativity does not have only one method or direction.

Sussi the traditional weaving pattern

Back when I was a student my weaving teacher had asked us to re invent a traditional woven pattern called "Sussi" famous in interior Sindh where the threads are predominately colorful or single colored with patterns made out of white and black threads only. However as time and culture evolved so did the design and color patterns. These are my takes on it. The first colorful pattern with various material insertions is a table cloth finished with an orange handwoven lace and the second is a recently woven shawl for a customer on a similar design pattern but with a grey background. My love for creating hand product shas grown immencely.

Clusters of Emotions

This is a series of woven wall hangings that I wove using various materials and colors to express my frustration and agony related to the visa status that I had to go through during my stay here at USA. Some of my work remains at display at OIS office at NC state. Life had been a rugged unbalanced graph where one day I woke up frustrated, chained and tied down and the other days life could not have been more beautiful. This feeling of constant confusion, isolation and incompleteness and how the struggle wore me down and how I manage to channel all of this in to a positive note is what I communicate in my woven work using colors and textures. I hope you enjoy these pieces as much as I did creating them.

Lawn Frenzy

One of the best things about Summer back at home is the exhibitions that are lined up of Lawn designs and prints. Its the celebration of the coming of summer, the explosion of prints, color and design, the embellishments with laces and beads. Clothes ,clothes and more clothes was the reason why I actually got in to Textiles myself. This is one of the lawn designs in citrus colors that I came up with and there are more to come. The main design and its co ordinates have been mapped for visual perspective. My designs are easily workable via flat or roller screen printing techniques. The upcoming designs following this one are all about heading back to the root of simple prints with merged researched designs.
